Round the world yacht racing:
How Opentec helped an Aussie team take on the world's oceans in an application where others hadn't previously dared go!
Opentec rugged notebook computers have been used by Australia's marine hydrography service for coastal mapping for a decade. Used for extended periods in small open boats in extremes of moisture, salt spray and heat, and subject to daily washdowns to remove salt, they've out lasted and out performed any other computer.
Little wonder that when Yacht Racing Australia staff went looking for a notebook computer that would survive onboard a yacht sailing round the world, that they turned to Opentec. The middle of the Atlantic is not a place to discover you made a bad choice!
"As the navigator for Yacht Racing Australia, I am reliant on computer technology to give me the information I need in the quickest possible time frame. This information will hopefully give my team and ultimately my yacht the edge and added advantage needed to perform when it counts.
We have been using the Openfire Series Rugged Portable to run our racing software for the past 2 years. It is also used to access the latest weather information from the internet via satellite and GSM communication. It is critical in ocean yacht racing to have reliable access to this type of data. The Openfire system provides that reliability.
Ocean yacht racing is a tough environment for a computer to function in. It must be able to survive not only the salt water but the rough conditions that the crew and the boat encounter.
The Openfire definately survives and performs in our critical application."
It's an application other vendors have subsequently - often years after we first ventured there - supplied products for, but it's an application we successfully addressed nearly a decade ago; and where our computers performed with absolute reliability. Ten years on, we've learned even more about rugged computing and it's those lessons that keep us and our customers ahead of the pack.
