BEYOND TOUGH: our theme for Pacific 2008 Expo:

Durability and reliability are essential in delivering applications into the field, and at Pacific 2008 Opentec demonstrated just how durable our products are by parking a 2.45 tonne 4WD on one!

For four full days, a standard Openfire RPC 13M (mil-spec) notebook, featuring the same rugged chassis as all the RPC range, and made of the same material as the Openfire RPT and Openfire RPDA ranges, supported approximately 650kgs of static load (the force being applied by the wheel of  2.45 tonne Jeep Wrangler) without skipping a beat. Adjacent, we subjected another notebook to a simulated sandstorm. Again, the unit remained usable and performed reliably.

What got just as much attention was our new range of Intel Core2 Duo powered notebooks (RPCs) and tablets (RPTs); our new range of PDA accessories including the 'ABC' (or Advanced ballistics Computer, which incorporates a sub-5m GPS and digital compass/inclinometer, plus advanced ballistics foecasting software for interdiction applications); plus our new range of industrial-spec'd tablets (the Jackaroo and the Perente) and our new industrial spec'd PDA (the Bluetongue).

Of greater interest to many was the growing stable of end-to-end engineered solutions that Opentec has been involved in developing in parternship with a select group of highly innovative Australian companies. "Opentec is not about hardware, but about high value-add outcomes for customers," commented Inventis Ltd head of marketing, Bruce Lehmann. "Creating solutons that add considerable value to field-based users, in addition to supplying hardware that is innately more durable and more likely to survive the rigours of prolonged outdoor portable use are our main strengths. Delivering on the promise of improved mobility and functionality that hardware-only suppliers simply can't is what keeps us ahead of the pack".

Stay tuned. We'll be publishing more information about these great new solutions over the coming weeks.

The 2.45 tonne Jeep Wrangler that features in our 2008 ad campaign was our drawcard at Pac '08.

Just to prove our ad wasn't all smoke and mirrors, the Wrangler was parked on the keypad of this stock standard, unmodified RPC 13M notebook and the RPC left running.

And 4days later, the RPC was still going strong.

Also appearing on our stand was an RPC 13M fitted with the touchscreen option, which endured a simulated sandstorm for 4 days. Dowsed in a continuous cascade of fine sand, users could reach in and use the keyboard, mousepad or touchscreen to prove for themselves what many defence customers already know: that Opentecs are highly resistant to fine particles while remaining fully serviceable.

Just one of the solutions on display, that we've helped develop, was the ATI 'MAC2' Tactical Display Terminal, now in active service with the Royal Australian Navy aboard Navy Patrol Boat and Frigate RHIBs (small Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boats).

Also successfully trialled by the US Navy, the'MAC2' system is fast gaining recognition as the 'best of breed' in small, portable (ie vehicle-mount or man-packable) and durable tactical awareness systems for civil and military emergency response applications.

Another world first is the ABC (Advanced Ballistics Computer). Developed in partnership with Cheytac of the USA, it comprises a customised Opentec RPDA 5M fitted with a GPS DigiCompass/Inclinometer module that acts as the data aquisition and firing solutions computer for the world's most sophisticated, small-format rifle targetting system.
