Water & Dust resistance testing

It really does pay to understand what a vendor claims and what is actually being offered. All our products are tested to comply with not only various MIL-STD 810G requirements for resistance to dust and moisture, but are also rated against the IEC 60529 Ingress Protection (IP) rating system.

With ratings from IP54 (will survive 4" rain per hour for extended periods) to IP67 (will survive total immersion in water to 1m for 30 minutes), plus many years experience delivering products into maritime and outdoor applications where they really have had to endure the worst the Australian Outdoors can throw at them, we're delivering GENUINELY water and dust resistant computers you can rely on.

Water resistance testing:
MIL-STD-810F, Method 506.3 -
Procedure I (Blowing Rain)

TEST: The Water resistance test subjected the unit to 114mm/hour (>4"/hour) rainfall for 30 minutes. Units are tested while operating with the LCD panel open (if a notebook) and port covers closed. Units are opened following testing to inspect for water intrusion. No water can penetrate the units.

Salt fog (corrosive atmosphere) testing:
MIL-STD-810F, Method 509

This is potentially an important consideration for maritime or industrial applications. A product might be highly moisture resistant (eg be rated as IP 67 'fully waterproof' (see IP testing below) but fail over time because the device corrodes in salty air.

TEST: Units are placed in a salt fog chamber for 48 hours with the salt fog spray at 35°C (95°F). Units must boot and operate following the Salt Fog test regime.

General dust & moisture resistance (ingress protection) testing:
IEC 60529

The IP test series uses a numeric rating system comprised of two digits, with the fitrst relating to Dust/Small Particle Resistance and the second relating to Moisture Resistance. An IP rating is given as a combination of dust and moisture resistance (eg IP54), as follows:

IP Ratings
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Protection against dust in sufficient quantity entering device to interfere with normal operation.

5

Protection against low pressure jets of water entering from all directions.
